About PLR files
A .PLR file is primarily a player profile file used by Terraria, the highly popular 2D sandbox game developed by Re-Logic. It stores crucial character data, including maximum health and mana, inventory contents, character appearance, active buffs, and total playtime. The game automatically creates and reads these files from a dedicated "Players" directory. On Windows, this is usually found at C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Players. Players frequently handle these files to share maxed-out characters, migrate saves to a new computer, or back up their progress. A major limitation of the Terraria .PLR format is its proprietary binary structure. You cannot open or edit it directly with a standard text editor. If you attempt to open it in Notepad, you will see scrambled text and risk corrupting the save file. To safely edit the contents, users rely on dedicated web tools like Terrasavr, which can parse the binary data and allow players to modify their inventory or unlock research items for "Journey Mode". While Terraria is the dominant user of this extension, .PLR is also used by racing simulators like rFactor and GTR2 as a plain-text player profile. In enterprise settings, it occasionally appears as a data file for Yokogawa paperless recorders or as a project schedule in Elecosoft Powerproject. When dealing with a Terraria .PLR file, traditional conversion to a document or image format is not applicable. The goal is preservation and sharing. For archiving or uploading online, compress the .PLR file into a ZIP or 7Z archive. If your character file gets corrupted, you can easily restore it by finding the corresponding .plr.bak file in the same directory and removing the ".bak" extension. The PLR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PLR converter.
