PKP files serve distinct purposes across different industries. Most commonly, they are AV control system drivers developed by Extron Electronics to contain configuration logic for enterprise audio-visual hardware. Alternatively, .PKP files act as PCB pick and place files generated by Labcenter Proteus to instruct robotic manufacturing assembly lines exactly where to mount electronic components. The extension is also occasionally used as a game data package file for titles like Maxis Spore. Opening a .PKP file typically requires the original software, such as Extron Global Configurator or Proteus PCB Design Software. The main disadvantage of the .PKP format is its highly fragmented and proprietary nature. Because multiple unrelated programs use the exact same file extension, generic software cannot interpret it. Specialized software like Proteus and Extron often require expensive licensing, making it frustrating to access the data without an active subscription or hardware purchase.
