About PIX files

The .PIX extension is a "collision zone" for three completely different file formats, causing significant confusion for users.

  1. PCIDSK Database (Primary Use): Most commonly, this is a complex geospatial file developed by PCI Geomatics (now Catalyst). Unlike a standard image, a PCIDSK file is a "database" that holds multi-channel satellite imagery, vector layers, and attribute data in a single container. These files are often gigabytes in size and contain non-visual data (like infrared or thermal bands) that standard image viewers cannot interpret. Users typically convert these to GeoTIFF to preserve the georeferencing metadata for use in software like QGIS or ArcGIS.
  2. Alias Raster Image: In the world of 3D modeling and animation, .PIX refers to a legacy raster image format used by Alias (now owned by Autodesk). These are simple texture files used in older rendering pipelines. They are rarely supported by modern web browsers or photo editors, making conversion to PNG or TIFF essential for viewing.
  3. Pixso Project File: A modern use case involves Pixso, a collaborative UI/UX design tool similar to Figma. These .PIX files are proprietary project containers that cannot be opened outside the Pixso environment. To share these designs, users must export them from Pixso to PDF or Sketch formats.

The PIX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIX converter.
