About PIX files

The .PIX file format is primarily used as a PCIDSK (PCI Disk) geospatial database file by PCI Geomatics (now CATALYST). These files store massive remote sensing datasets, including satellite imagery, multi-spectral channels, projection data, and bitmap layers within a single proprietary container. Other software, such as the DICOM Standard for medical imaging, Pixso for UI/UX design, and legacy 3D applications like Alias, also utilize the .PIX extension for raster graphics and project archives. The main disadvantage of the .PIX format is its fragmented, highly specialized nature. PCIDSK files often exceed several gigabytes and require expensive, niche GIS software to view. Legacy Alias or DICOM .PIX files are completely unsupported by modern web browsers and standard image viewers like Windows Photos. This lack of interoperability traps your data in specific, often outdated, software ecosystems. To solve this, you must convert your files. For web use and seamless sharing, convert standard raster .PIX files to JPG or PNG. For professional GIS archiving, convert PCIDSK .PIX files to TIFF (GeoTIFF) to preserve spatial metadata without proprietary lock-in. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it right in your browser, free, online, and without installing heavy software.

The PIX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIX converter.
