About AFI files

An .AFI file is most often a File Backup Image created by AOMEI Backupper. Unlike standard archives like ZIP or RAR, this proprietary container locks your documents, photos, and folders inside a specific format that Windows cannot natively open. This creates a significant difficulty: if you lose the original software or try to access your backup on a different machine without AOMEI installed, your data remains inaccessible. In a corporate or financial context, particularly in New Zealand, an .AFI file may alternatively be a Direct Credit file used for batch banking payments. These are often raw text files that are unreadable to standard spreadsheet software, making manual review difficult. Less commonly, it refers to a Spanish Social Security affiliation file.

For AOMEI backups, the pragmatic goal is extraction rather than direct conversion; you typically need to use the AOMEI utilities to mount the image and copy files out to DOCX, JPG, or PDF. For banking files, the goal is converting the data to CSV or XLSX for viewing in Microsoft Excel.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AFI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AVIF, AIF, AVI, BMT, RGBA, EGA, PNG and MP3 files.

The AFI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AFI converter.
