About PFM files
A .PFM file is primarily a Portable FloatMap image, a simple 32-bit per channel high dynamic range (HDR) raster image format associated with the Netpbm project. It stores uncompressed floating-point pixel data, making it useful in scientific imaging, HDR photography, and 3D rendering environments. Alternatively, older .PFM files act as Printer Font Metrics files. These companion files store physical dimensions and kerning data for Adobe Type 1 fonts and must be paired with a PFB (Printer Font Binary) file to function.
You can open FloatMap .PFM files using advanced image editors like Adobe Photoshop or command-line utilities like pfstools. Font metrics .PFM files require legacy font management software like FontLab Fontographer.
The main disadvantage of .PFM files is their severe lack of mainstream support. Standard image viewers, web browsers, and modern operating systems cannot read FloatMap images natively, and their uncompressed nature results in massive file sizes. Furthermore, Type 1 font .PFM files are now entirely obsolete. Adobe officially ended support for Type 1 fonts in 2023, rendering them unusable in modern design software. The .PFM file alone is also useless without its accompanying PFB file because it does not contain the actual font glyphs.
For web use and quick sharing, convert FloatMap .PFM images to JPG or WebP. Note that this process tonemaps the HDR data, losing the extreme dynamic range but making it viewable anywhere. For lossless archiving, convert to PNG or TIFF. If you are dealing with legacy font files, convert the PFB and .PFM pair to an OpenType (.OTF) or TrueType (.TTF) format to ensure compatibility with modern applications. Drag and drop your .PFM file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

If you want to convert PFM file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON or AFM, you can use Adobe Photoshop or similar software from the "HDR Image or Font Metrics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert UFO, WOFF, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF or TXF files to PFM, try Adobe Photoshop or another comparable tool in the "HDR Image or Font Metrics" category.
The PFM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFM converter.
