About PFM files
The .PFM extension refers to two distinct file types that often cause compatibility headaches due to their specialized nature.
1. Portable FloatMap Image (Primary): This is a raw, uncompressed floating-point image format used to store High Dynamic Range (HDR) data, often in computer graphics and scientific visualization.
Constraints: Because PFM files store 32-bit floating-point values directly, they are exceptionally large compared to standard images. They are not supported by web browsers or standard photo viewers (like Windows Photos or macOS Preview). Sharing a PFM file typically results in the recipient being unable to open it.
Conversion Targets: To share or view these images on the web, convert them to PNG or JPG (note: this clamps the dynamic range). For professional editing while preserving HDR data, convert to EXR or TIFF.
2. Printer Font Metrics (Secondary): A legacy file created by Adobe Systems for PostScript Type 1 fonts. It contains binary data regarding character spacing and kerning but does not contain the actual glyph shapes (which reside in a companion PFB file).
Constraints: You cannot install a font using only a .PFM file; the set is incomplete without the PFB. Furthermore, Type 1 fonts are considered obsolete, with support dropped in modern versions of Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office.
Conversion Targets: To use these legacy fonts on modern systems, you must convert the Type 1 pair (.pfm + .pfb) into a single OTF (OpenType) or TTF (TrueType) file.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your PFM file.
If you want to convert PFM file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON or AFM, you can use Adobe_Photoshop or similar software from the "High Dynamic Range Imaging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert UFO, WOFF, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF or TXF files to PFM, try Adobe_Photoshop or another comparable tool in the "High Dynamic Range Imaging" category.
The PFM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFM converter.
