About PFM files

The .PFM extension refers to two distinct file types that often cause compatibility headaches due to their specialized nature.

1. Portable FloatMap Image (Primary): This is a raw, uncompressed floating-point image format used to store High Dynamic Range (HDR) data, often in computer graphics and scientific visualization.

2. Printer Font Metrics (Secondary): A legacy file created by Adobe Systems for PostScript Type 1 fonts. It contains binary data regarding character spacing and kerning but does not contain the actual glyph shapes (which reside in a companion PFB file).

The PFM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PFM converter.
