About PET files

The .pet extension acts as a container for several distinct, incompatible formats, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it represents a Puppy Linux installation package - essentially a compressed archive (similar to .TAR.GZ) containing software files and a 32-byte MD5 checksum. While efficient for Linux systems, these files are unrecognizable to Windows or macOS without specific tools. Alternatively, in engineering environments, a .pet file may be a proprietary manufacturing model created by PTC Pro/ENGINEER (now Creo) or a project file from Schlumberger (now SLB) Petrel software used in geophysics. Users commonly encounter problems when trying to view these contents without the original expensive proprietary software. For Linux packages, the best conversion strategy is renaming the extension to .TAR.GZ or converting to ZIP to inspect contents using 7-Zip. For CAD and project management files, users typically need to convert them to PDF for documentation or STEP for 3D interoperability, as the native formats are locked into their respective legacy ecosystems.
