About PEI files

The .PEI file format primarily functions as a game data archive used by titles like Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) by Konami and Predator: Hunting Grounds built on Unreal Engine. These files act as large containers that hold essential game assets like 3D models, textures, and audio clips. In a completely different industry, .PEI files are also created by Pulse Microsystems as proprietary embroidery design data files, or as legacy Pocket PC e-Book images by LEAD Technologies.

The main disadvantage of the .PEI format is its highly fragmented and proprietary nature. Because multiple, completely unrelated software ecosystems use the exact same file extension, standard operating systems and web browsers cannot identify or open them natively. Game-related .PEI files can exceed several gigabytes in size and are structured to be read exclusively by the original game engine, not by average users. Meanwhile, embroidery .PEI files are locked into commercial Pulse software, making them useless if you want to use them on a standard consumer embroidery machine without paying for expensive licenses.

If you want to modify a game, your best conversion target is a standard archive format like ZIP. Fortunately, many game-based .PEI files are structurally just ZIP archives with a renamed extension. Extracting them allows you to access standard files like PNG, WAV, or OBJ. For embroidery users, converting the file to universally accepted stitch formats like DST or PES is critical for machine compatibility, though you should expect to lose proprietary color-palette data during the transfer.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because there is no universal standard for it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex internal data. Standard online tools usually fail completely. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as standard ZIP compression - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PEI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PK, KFS and APB files.
