About KFS files

Most .KFS files are actually ZIP archives in disguise, primarily used by the King's Bounty game series (like The Legend and Dark Side) to store game assets. Developers use this custom extension to obscure the file's true nature, preventing casual users from accidentally deleting critical data. Inside these archives, you will typically find TXT configuration files, PNG or DDS textures, and game scripts needed for modding. A major limitation for users is that Windows does not natively associate .KFS with archive managers, resulting in an "Unknown file type" error.

A secondary, less common use of the .KFS extension is for 3D model files in the Max Payne series (specifically the MAX-FX engine). These are binary files containing character meshes and textures, not archives, and cannot be opened with 7-Zip.
