About PASS files

.PASS files are primarily used by Apple Wallet (formerly Apple Passbook) to store digital assets like boarding passes, event tickets, coupons, and store loyalty cards. Technically, these files are standard ZIP archives containing a pass.json file that defines the layout and text, alongside image assets like PNG files and a cryptographic signature. Secondary, rare uses for the .PASS extension include stolen credentials data files generated by certain malware families, or authentication data files used by Prosis marine software.

These files are officially opened and managed using Apple Wallet on iOS and macOS devices. Android users typically rely on third-party applications like PassAndroid to import them.

The main disadvantage of the .PASS format is its strict tie to the Apple ecosystem. They do not open natively on Windows PCs, cannot be easily viewed in standard web browsers, and cannot be printed directly as a single page. Furthermore, because the visual representation relies on the operating system's specific rendering engine to assemble the raw data and images, cross-platform sharing is heavily restricted.

Converting .PASS files to PDF or JPG is highly recommended if you need to print a boarding pass or share a static visual copy with non-Apple users. Note that converting to a static format means losing the interactive elements, such as location-based notifications or real-time balance updates. Alternatively, renaming the file to ZIP allows you to extract the underlying JSON and PNG files.

This file format is difficult to open or convert visually because it is not a single flat image or document, but a structured archive that requires specialized software to render the layout correctly. Standard online converters often fail to process it into a readable document. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PASS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ELF, PKPASS, ENC, PKPASSES, DOI and YYZ files.
