About PART files

A .part file is a temporary data container created by web browsers like Mozilla Firefox and download managers to store a file while it is actively transferring from a server. It holds the incomplete data chunks of what will eventually become a full ZIP, MP4, EXE, or PDF file. A tiny percentage of these files are also used as PartDesigner Parts by The LEGO Group, but they are overwhelmingly temporary internet downloads.

The primary disadvantage of the .part format is that it is inherently broken. Because the file transfer was paused or interrupted, the file lacks essential metadata, headers, or footers required by standard software to read it. If a 10GB video download drops at 99%, you are left with an unplayable file that clutters your hard drive. Most standard online converters fail immediately because they expect a 100% valid, contiguous file structure.

You cannot traditionally convert a .part file. The best solution is to resume the download in the original software. If that fails, you can try manually renaming the extension to the intended format. For example, renaming a partial video download to MP4 or MKV might allow VLC media player to salvage and play the downloaded portion. Partial archives can sometimes be opened with WinRAR or 7-Zip using their 'Keep broken files' extraction option.

Because standard tools reject incomplete files, processing them is highly difficult. Often, only the original download software can properly read or resume the data stream. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a partial MP4 header or an incomplete ZIP structure - viewing or conversion of the surviving chunks may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PART file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
