About PAF files

The .PAF file is primarily a genealogy database created by Personal Ancestral File, a legacy desktop software originally distributed by FamilySearch. These files store structured family history data, including names, vital dates, relationships, and source citations. Less commonly, the .PAF extension is used for Portable Application Installer files by PortableApps.com, or as a legacy raw image format by Panasonic.

The main disadvantage of the .PAF genealogy format is severe obsolescence. FamilySearch permanently discontinued the software in 2013. The proprietary database locks your family history in an outdated container that is highly incompatible with modern 64-bit operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. If you do not migrate this data, you risk losing decades of genealogical research to software decay.
