About RMGC files

A .rmgc file is the primary database created by older versions of RootsMagic (versions 4 through 7). Under the hood, it is a standard SQLite database file that acts as a container for an entire family tree, including individual records, relationships, events, and citations.

While robust, the .rmgc format is a "Legacy" file type. Modern versions of RootsMagic (8, 9, 10+) use the .rmtree format. Furthermore, .rmgc files are binary databases, meaning they cannot be opened in text editors like Notepad, nor can they be directly uploaded to genealogy sites like Ancestry.com or FamilySearch, which typically require a GEDCOM (.GED) file. Users frequently run into problems when trying to share these files with relatives who do not own RootsMagic, or when trying to access data on a computer without the software installed. The most practical solution is to convert the file to GEDCOM for data transfer or PDF for visual sharing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RMGC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PAF, RMGB and RMG files.
