About RMGB files

An .RMGB file is a compressed backup archive generated by RootsMagic, a popular genealogy software used to organize family trees and historical records. Internally, this file is actually a standard ZIP container that holds your primary database file (typically RMGC or .RMTREE) and associated metadata.

The main issue for users is that .RMGB files are not directly editable; they are strictly for storage and restoration. If you receive one from a relative or find an old archive, you cannot simply double-click to view the family tree without installing the specific version of RootsMagic that created it. Furthermore, because it is a proprietary backup format, sharing it with users of other software like Family Tree Maker or Ancestry is impossible without conversion.

For best results, users typically need to convert this file based on their goal:

Convert.Guru analyzes your RMGB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PAF, RMGC and RMG files.

The RMGB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RMGB converter.
