About P2M files

The .p2m file extension is primarily used as a 3D material definition or texture file. These files store surface finishes, lighting responses, and textural maps used by complex rendering engines. They are also occasionally used to store complete 3D models or piping and instrumentation (P&ID) diagrams in engineering pipelines.

These files are typically opened and managed using heavy industrial design software like SolidWorks (specifically for the PhotoView 360 and PhotoWorks add-ins), PTC Creo, PROCAD, and Planit Cabinet Vision.

The main disadvantage of .p2m files is their highly proprietary nature. They lock your material definitions and 3D data inside expensive software ecosystems. You cannot open a .p2m file in a standard web browser or basic image viewer. Sharing these files with clients or external teams is frustrating because the recipient must have a costly CAD license and the exact matching software version installed just to see a texture.

Users typically need to convert these materials into standard image formats like JPG or PNG to share texture maps, or convert the geometric data to standard 3D formats like OBJ or STL. However, be aware that complex procedural material properties (like light scattering or bump data) may be lost when flattening the file to a simple 2D image.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. They do not have access to the proprietary rendering engines needed to interpret the data structures. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a hidden JPEG texture map - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your P2M file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, PNG, JPEG, WEBP, P7M, PDF, STEP, SLDDRW and PRT files.

FAQ

If you want to convert P2M file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use SolidWorks or similar software from the "3D Material Definition File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to P2M, try SolidWorks or another comparable tool in the "3D Material Definition File" category.

The P2M Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our P2M converter.
