The .P21 file extension is most frequently associated with the STEP Part 21 exchange format, an ASCII-based implementation of the ISO 10303 standard for representing 3D product data. It serves as a neutral bridge between disparate CAD systems, allowing users to move geometry from CATIA to SolidWorks or Autodesk Fusion without relying on proprietary formats. While the format is technically human-readable text, the content is a complex structural listing of geometric entities (B-reps, NURBS surfaces) that is functionally useless without a proper 3D interpreter.
Practical usage is often hampered by the format's "dumb solid" nature - converting to .P21 usually strips away the parametric design history (the "recipe" used to build the model), leaving only the final shape. Furthermore, many modern viewers strictly look for the STP or STEP extension, meaning a valid .P21 file might fail to open simply due to its filename. For 3D printing, users must convert this boundary representation data into a mesh format like STL or OBJ. For documentation and archiving, converting to 3D PDF is the standard approach to make the model accessible to non-engineers.
Note: In rare cases, a .P21 file may be a 2021 tax return file generated by Intuit TurboTax or ProFile. These are proprietary, encrypted databases that cannot be converted by third-party tools and must be opened with the specific 2021 version of the tax software.
