About OWL files
A .OWL file is a Web Ontology Language document used to formally describe relationships between things in a specific domain. Developed by the W3C, it is a fundamental building block of the Semantic Web, typically serialized in RDF/XML format. While powerful for AI and knowledge graphs, the raw XML structure is verbose, difficult for humans to read, and often unsupported by standard text editors or web browsers without specialized plugins. Opening these files usually requires complex academic software like Protégé or TopBraid Composer.
Users frequently need to convert .OWL files to overcome these usability barriers. For easier human editing and readability, converting to Turtle (.TTL) or N3 is highly recommended. For modern web development and API integration, JSON-LD is the preferred target. To share the ontology's structure with non-technical stakeholders, converting to visualization formats like SVG or PDF via a graph visualizer is essential.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OWL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OWL file to TTL, RDF, JSON, CSV, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS or PHP, you can use Protégé or similar software from the "Semantic Web Ontology" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to OWL, try Protégé or another comparable tool in the "Semantic Web Ontology" category.
The OWL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OWL converter.
