Convert OWX to another file type
To convert OWX Ontology files to another format, you need WebProtégé or other Developer software.
Convert a file to OWX
To convert other file formats to the "Ontology Serialization" file type, you need software like WebProtégé or a similar tool.
About OWX files
The .OWX file extension represents an OWL 2 Ontology saved in the OWL/XML serialization format. Unlike the more common OWL files (which typically use RDF/XML syntax) or TTL (Turtle), the .OWX format is a strict XML representation designed to bridge the gap between semantic web tools and standard XML processing utilities like XSLT. It is the default export format for WebProtégé and is natively supported by the OWL API.
While .OWX files are excellent for machine processing and validation within XML pipelines, they are often a source of friction for researchers and developers. The format is extremely verbose, making it difficult to read or edit manually compared to Manchester Syntax or Turtle. Furthermore, many legacy semantic web tools, triple stores (like Apache Jena), and graph databases may not ingest .OWX directly, preferring standard RDF/XML or N-Triples. Users frequently need to convert .OWX files to OWL (RDF/XML) for broad compatibility, TTL (Turtle) for human readability, or .JSON-LD for modern web applications.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OWX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OWX file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use WebProtégé or similar software from the "Semantic Web Ontology Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to OWX, try WebProtégé or another comparable tool in the "Semantic Web Ontology Storage" category.
The OWX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OWX converter.
