The .OBML format, which stands for Opera Binary Markup Language, is a highly specialized file type used by the Opera Mini mobile browser to save web pages for offline viewing. Originally designed for feature phones running J2ME and early smartphones, this format allowed users on slow 2G or 3G networks to store content locally without consuming excessive storage space.
The main disadvantage of the .OBML format is its heavily proprietary and binary nature. Unlike standard web formats, it is completely inaccessible to modern desktop browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. It requires users to maintain a specific, often outdated version of the Opera Mini app just to read their own saved data. Furthermore, because Opera's servers pre-rendered and compressed the page layout into this binary format, reversing it back to a standard web page is incredibly challenging.
