The .OBML format, standing for Opera Binary Markup Language, is a proprietary file type generated exclusively by the Opera Mini web browser. Unlike standard HTML or MHTML files that save raw code for local rendering, OBML files contain pre-processed, binary data compressed by Opera's proxy servers. This compression reduces data usage by up to 90%, which is excellent for mobile browsing but disastrous for interoperability. You cannot open these files in modern desktop browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, nor can you edit them in text editors like Notepad++. They are effectively "locked" to the Opera Mini environment.
Users typically encounter these files when backing up mobile data or trying to access old saved pages on a PC. The friction arises because the format relies on a specific rendering engine that doesn't exist on desktop systems. To make the content usable again, you must convert the file. For archiving and viewing, converting to PDF is the gold standard, as it freezes the visual layout.
