An .OPF (Open Packaging Format) file is an XML document that acts as the blueprint for an EPUB e-book. It is maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). This file contains the e-book's metadata (author, title, language, publisher), a manifest of all included files (HTML, images, CSS), and the spine that dictates the reading order. Typically, an .OPF file is archived within a standard EPUB container. You can open and edit .OPF files using e-book management software like Calibre or Sigil, or simply by using a standard text editor since it is formatted in plain text. A secondary, completely unrelated use for .OPF files is as project files for Kepware KEPServerEX or Bentley OpenPlant.
The main disadvantage of an .OPF file is that it is not an actual book. It is just the structural map. If you try to share an .OPF file by itself, the recipient will not be able to read the e-book because the actual text and images are missing. Users often extract .OPF files from an EPUB archive to edit metadata but struggle to repackage them correctly without corrupting the archive.
