About OPF files
The .OPF file extension primarily identifies the Open Packaging Format, a legacy-standard XML file that serves as the "brain" of an EPUB digital book. It functions as a manifest, listing every image, chapter, and stylesheet required to display the ebook, while also defining crucial metadata like the title, author, and reading order (spine). Because .OPF files are essentially raw XML code intended for software interpretation rather than human reading, they pose significant challenges for end-users: they cannot be opened by standard e-readers like Kindle or Apple Books, and they often appear as loose files when an ebook archive is accidentally unpacked or corrupted. To make the content usable, users generally need to compile the .OPF and its associated resources back into a single container format. For broad compatibility, converting the package to EPUB is ideal for modern e-readers, while MOBI remains necessary for older Amazon devices. For archiving or printing, converting the ebook structure to PDF ensures the layout is fixed and accessible on any device without specialized software.
A secondary, distinct use of the .OPF extension is for KEPServerEX project files by Kepware. These are industrial automation configuration files used to manage OPC server connectivity and are not compatible with ebook software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OPF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The OPF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OPF converter.
