About OFM files
The .OFM file extension is most commonly associated with Nuance OmniForm, a legacy software application designed for digitizing paper forms into fillable electronic documents. These files act as containers for form layout, logic, and user data, structured using the Microsoft Compound File Binary format.
A significant difficulty for users is that OmniForm has largely been discontinued or absorbed into other Kofax (now Tungsten Automation) workflows, making .OFM files difficult to open without outdated software. They are incompatible with modern web browsers, Microsoft Word, or standard PDF viewers. This proprietary lock-in poses a risk for archiving; if the original software is lost, the data becomes inaccessible.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Archiving & Sharing: Convert .OFM forms to PDF (Portable Document Format). This ensures the form's visual integrity is preserved and can be opened on any device.
- For Data Extraction: If you need to edit the text, converting to DOCX or RTF is often necessary, though complex form formatting may require manual adjustment.
Secondary Use Case (Embroidery):
Less frequently, an .OFM file is a native project file for Melco embroidery software (like DesignShop). Unlike stitch-based formats (DST), Melco .OFM files contain object-based vector data, allowing users to resize designs without losing stitch density. To use these designs on non-Melco machines (e.g., Brother or Janome), users must convert them to machine-specific formats like PES, DST, or EXP.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OFM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted EMB, PDF, OMF, PXF, PNG, DST, HTML, CRDOWNLOAD, DOCX, RLD, INP, RPMSG and FH11 files.
The OFM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OFM converter.
