Extract text from OmniForm or embroidery files (OFM)
To convert OFM files to another format, you need Nuance OmniForm or other Data software.
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Document / Embroidery" file type, you need software like Nuance OmniForm or a similar tool.
The .OFM file extension primarily belongs to Nuance OmniForm, a legacy software used to design and distribute digital fillable forms. Internally, these files rely on the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format to package text layout and form fields into a single proprietary container. A smaller percentage (roughly 1%) of .OFM files are machine embroidery designs created for Melco commercial embroidery hardware.
You need to convert .OFM files because both variations suffer from severe compatibility limits. Nuance OmniForm is obsolete abandonware. Users face significant challenges opening these forms on modern operating systems, and they cannot be viewed natively in any web browser. Furthermore, an active subscription or legacy software license is often required just to access the data. Similarly, Melco embroidery files contain machine-specific stitch coordinates that standard image editors or vector tools simply cannot read.
For OmniForm documents, the best conversion target is PDF. Exporting to PDF preserves the visual layout for printing and sharing, though you will permanently lose the interactive form fields. For Melco embroidery files, converting to DST (Tajima) or EXP (Bernina) is recommended to ensure the design can be stitched on competitor hardware, although specific thread colour metadata is sometimes lost in the translation.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because its data structures are closed and highly proprietary. Often, only the original Nuance or Melco software can properly read or export the data.
