About OEB files

The .OEB extension is shared by two distinct legacy formats, often causing confusion.

  1. Open eBook Publication (OEB): This is the XML-based ancestor of the modern EPUB format, developed by the Open eBook Forum (now IDPF). It is a container format (often a ZIP package) holding HTML text, CSS styling, and metadata for older digital books. While it paved the way for modern e-reading, most current devices (like Kindle or Apple Books) cannot open raw .OEB files directly. You typically need to convert these to EPUB for reflowable text on e-readers or PDF for fixed-layout archiving.
  2. Outlook Express Backup: A proprietary backup archive created by third-party utilities (most notably the Outlook Express Backup Wizard by QSX). These files contain a compressed snapshot of your old email identities, including DBX (mail folders) and WAB (address books). The original software is largely defunct, leaving users with a "locked" backup. However, the internal format is standard ZIP compression.

Pragmatic Workaround: If you have the backup type, you likely don't need a converter. Simply rename the file extension from .OEB to .ZIP, and you can extract your email databases using Windows Explorer.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OEB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EPUB, SIG, EML and RPMSG files.

The OEB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OEB converter.
