About OCX files

The .OCX file extension primarily identifies an ActiveX Control, a reusable software component developed by Microsoft based on the Component Object Model (COM). These files function essentially as specialized DLL files, providing modular functionality - such as scrollbars, calendars, or media players - to third-party applications and the legacy Internet Explorer.

The Problem:
Because .OCX files are compiled binary executables, they cannot be opened or edited like standard documents. They are proprietary, deprecated in modern web standards (HTML5), and often blocked by security software due to historical vulnerabilities. A common point of confusion arises when users receive a .OCX file expecting a document; in about 5% of cases, these are actually renamed ZIP files or encrypted DOCX documents (sometimes associated with ransomware or data recovery scenarios) that fail to open due to the wrong extension.

The Solution:

Convert.Guru analyzes your OCX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DOCX, PDF, DLL, JPG, EXE, DOC, CAB, PNG, JPEG, TXT, P7M, XML and ZIP files.

The OCX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OCX converter.
