About OBZ files
The .obz extension refers to two distinct file types that often confuse users due to their different structures.
- Poser Compressed 3D Object: The most common use (approx. 10%) is a GZIP-compressed version of the standard Wavefront .OBJ format, originally developed by Curious Labs (now Bondware) for Poser. These files reduce storage space for complex 3D meshes. The main drawback is that standard 3D editors like Blender or Autodesk Maya often fail to recognize or import .obz files directly, forcing users to manually rename or decompress them before editing.
- Open Board Format Package: A zipped container used in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps like CoughDrop and the Open Board Format initiative. This file functions as a complete communication board set, containing obf (JSON) layout files, images, and audio assets. Users frequently need to convert these packages to PDF to create printable, low-tech backups of communication boards for classroom or emergency use.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OBZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted CBZ, OBF, OBJ, CDR, PPZ, MCZ and RSR files.
The OBZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBZ converter.
