About OBP files

The .OBP file extension most commonly identifies a Bryce Object Preset, a proprietary format used by Bryce (currently managed by DAZ 3D) to store 3D models, textures, and material settings. These files are convenient for populating landscapes within the Bryce ecosystem but are notoriously difficult to use elsewhere. The main downside is the proprietary lock-in; standard 3D tools like Blender or Maya cannot natively open an .OBP file. You essentially need the original software to act as a bridge. For Archiving or cross-platform use, the best workflow is to open the file in Bryce and export the geometry to OBJ (Wavefront) or DXF.

A secondary but significant use case is within the openBVE train simulator community, where .OBP files function as add-on packages. In reality, these are often just renamed ZIP archives containing route or train data. If you are struggling to open an openBVE package, simply renaming the extension to ZIP often allows you to inspect the contents without specialized tools. Finally, users of the OpenScan project may encounter .OBP files as raw scan data containers, which require the specific scanner software to process into a usable mesh like STL.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OBP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ODP, ODT, OBJ, STL, NFF, BSK and TME files.

The OBP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBP converter.
