About NYF files

The .NYF file type is the proprietary database format used by myBase Desktop, a personal knowledge management (PKM) system developed by Wjj Software. Internally, these files use the SSG-5 (Structured Storage Grammar) architecture, which functions as a virtual file system capable of storing thousands of hierarchical text notes, webpages, and binary attachments (like images or PDFs) within a single compressed block.

While .NYF files are efficient for local storage, they create significant vendor lock-in. They are binary "black boxes" that cannot be indexed by Windows Search, opened in web browsers, or viewed with standard text editors. If you need to share your knowledge base with someone who does not have a paid myBase license, or if you are migrating to a different platform (like Obsidian or Evernote), the .NYF format is an obstacle.

To ensure long-term access, the best practice is to convert your .NYF database into open standards. For web publishing or broad sharing, converting to a HTML Tree is the most robust target, as it preserves the hierarchy and attachments. For creating standalone manuals or e-books, converting to CHM (Compiled HTML Help) or EPUB is recommended. PDF conversion is possible for printing but often results in the loss of the dynamic tree structure.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NYF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AUC, URD and LUX files.

The NYF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NYF converter.
