About URD files

A .URD file is most commonly a User Registration Data file generated by The Enigma Protector, used to secure executable software with licensing information. These files are encrypted "blobs" containing keys or trial limitations and are not designed to be opened, edited, or converted by end-users. Attempting to open them in a text editor typically results in garbled code.

Alternatively, in legacy computing environments, a .URD file may be a User-Defined Form or report definition from dBase (specifically dBase IV). These files define the layout of database reports. Users often struggle with these because modern database tools (like Microsoft Access or Excel) do not natively import this specific form definition format, rendering the data inaccessible without the original 1980s-era software.

The URD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our URD converter.
