To convert other file formats to the "Geolocator Log" file type, you need software like Migrate Technology Software or a similar tool.
About LUX files
The .LUX extension is shared by two distinct specialized communities, often leading to confusion. Most commonly, it is a raw data log generated by Migrate Technology Intigeo geolocators. These miniature devices are attached to birds and marine animals to track migration paths by recording ambient light levels (lux) over time. The file contains a long list of light intensity readings and timestamps, which researchers must process to calculate latitude and longitude based on day length and solar noon.
A major limitation for users is that .LUX files are not human-readable documents. You cannot simply double-click them in Microsoft Excel or Notepad to see a map. They require specialized processing using the Migrate Technology proprietary software or open-source R packages like GeoLight or FLightR. For analysis, the standard workflow is converting this raw binary/text data into CSV format or directly into geospatial coordinates.
Alternatively, a .LUX file may be a legacy light show sequence associated with Light-O-Rama (LOR) software. These files contain instructions for synchronizing holiday lights to music. Users often encounter these when trying to migrate old shows to newer versions of the software (which typically use LMS or .LOREDIT). Direct conversion is difficult without the original Light-O-Rama suite; the best workaround for sharing is often capturing the playback as an MP4 video file.
Warning: If a .LUX file suddenly appears on your system and your other files are inaccessible, it may be a symptom of the Lux Ransomware. In this specific case, the file is not a valid document but an encrypted victim of malware.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LUX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LUX file to PAR, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT or DB, you can use Migrate Technology Software or similar software from the "Environmental Data Logging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to LUX, try Migrate Technology Software or another comparable tool in the "Environmental Data Logging" category.
The LUX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LUX converter.
