The .nw file format is an application package utilized by the NW.js framework (formerly Node-Webkit) to distribute desktop applications. Developers use this format to package web applications built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so they can run as standalone desktop programs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
These packages are executed by the NW.js runtime, originally developed by the Intel Open Source Technology Center. The main disadvantage of the .nw format is its lack of native recognition. Standard operating systems do not know how to handle these files by default. Users often receive a .nw file and cannot run it without downloading the specific developer framework. Because it acts as an executable wrapper, standard text editors or media players cannot open it directly.
