To convert other file formats to the "Data Model File" file type, you need software like IBM InfoSphere Data Architect or a similar tool.
About DBM files
A .dbm file usually functions as a Physical Data Model file generated by IBM InfoSphere Data Architect or other enterprise database tools. It stores database schema designs, table structures, and relationships using an underlying XML framework. However, the extension is heavily overloaded. It is also utilized for proprietary databases in Okuma OSP-P and Fanuc CNC machines, AVEVA Wonderware InTouch HMI systems, SQLite 3 databases, satellite receiver channel lists, and even custom audio files for video games like Metal Gear Solid 4.
The primary disadvantage of a .dbm file is extreme fragmentation and vendor lock-in. Because dozens of unconnected platforms use the exact same .dbm extension, the internal structure varies wildly. While an IBM data model relies on readable standard XML, CNC machine parameters and embedded system databases are typically compiled into undocumented, closed-binary formats. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific parsing logic required for each obscure system. This forces users to rely on the original, often expensive or discontinued software - such as a proprietary CNC controller interface or an outdated CAD tool - just to access their data.
Converting a .dbm file depends entirely on its source platform. IBM XML-based models can be exported to XSD, SQL, or CSV for easier review and migration. SQLite variants can be dumped to standard SQL text scripts. However, proprietary binary .dbm files are notoriously difficult to open or convert, as only the original software can properly read or export the raw data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like XML or SQLite, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DBM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DBM file to MW, DB, W, DBI, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA or MB, you can use IBM InfoSphere Data Architect or similar software from the "Data Model & Database Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to DBM, try IBM InfoSphere Data Architect or another comparable tool in the "Data Model & Database Storage" category.
The DBM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DBM converter.
