The .ntd file extension is highly fragmented and represents several completely different data types. Its most common use is as a backup or note storage file for the ColorNote app on Android. Other common applications include proprietary image formats generated by Xerox WorkCentre scanners (often embedding TIFF data), screen captures from Yokogawa oscilloscopes (embedding PNG data), and historical financial trading data for the NinjaTrader platform.
The primary disadvantage of .ntd files is their severe lack of interoperability. A ColorNote backup cannot be easily opened on a PC without specific workarounds. Xerox scanner .ntd files often require outdated Watermark Client software to view, creating massive roadblocks in modern document workflows. Meanwhile, trading data from NinjaTrader is completely locked into their proprietary ecosystem.
