About SQF files

Most commonly, a .SQF file is a game script used by Bohemia Interactive titles, specifically the Arma series (e.g., Arma 3, Reforger) and DayZ. These files contain code written in the Status Quo Function language, governing mission logic, AI behavior, and event triggers. While technically plain text, treating them as standard documents is a mistake. Users often struggle because standard word processors like Microsoft Word add hidden formatting that breaks the script's syntax. Additionally, without the game engine, the code cannot be executed, leading users to convert them to TXT, CPP, or PDF for easier syntax highlighting, sharing on forums like GitHub, or archiving documentation.

A distinct, less common variation is the Squashfs file system image. These are read-only compressed archives used in Linux environments. Users encountering these often mistake them for text scripts, but they are binary archives that require extraction rather than simple text conversion. Finally, legacy users may encounter .SQF project files from the obsolete Sothink SWF Quicker, a tool for editing Flash animations. For Arma scripts, the best workflow is converting to plain text formats; for Squashfs, the goal is extraction; for Sothink, the only viable path is attempting to export to SWF if the legacy software is accessible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SQF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, LTX, FP and NTD files.

The SQF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SQF converter.
