About NDL files

The .NDL file extension primarily functions as an IBM Lotus Notes Document Link file. Users typically create these files by dragging and dropping an email, database, or document from the Lotus Notes interface to their desktop. The resulting file acts as a shortcut to an internal corporate resource. Alternatively, a .NDL file can be a Novel Digital Library ebook file used by the NovelCat reading app. These are essentially ZIP containers holding digital novel content.

Users often try to convert .NDL files because they cannot open them outside of their native software ecosystems. The Lotus Notes variant is highly proprietary. Standard online converters fail to process these files because the .NDL shortcut does not contain the actual document or email text; it merely contains an XML or plain text string with server addresses and database replica IDs. This means converting an .NDL shortcut directly to a PDF or DOCX is technically impossible without the active server connection. Similarly, the NovelCat format is a closed ebook ecosystem, frequently utilizing DRM encryption to lock users into a specific mobile reading application and preventing usage on standard e-readers.

For best results, Lotus Notes users should export their actual data to PDF or EML instead of sharing .NDL shortcuts. For NovelCat readers, converting to EPUB or TXT is the ideal target if the archive is unencrypted.

This file format is difficult to open or convert. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as the raw XML text of a Lotus link or an unencrypted document inside a NovelCat archive - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NSF, SDOC and NCF files.
