About NLF files

A .nlf file typically functions as either a Xerox Device Software Update Package or a Nintex License File. The Xerox variant is used to deliver firmware upgrades to enterprise printers and copiers. The Nintex version is a proprietary license key used to activate enterprise workflow automation software.

The main disadvantage of the .nlf format is its strictly proprietary, closed nature. The Xerox .nlf file is an encrypted Java archive wrapped in a ZIP container. This means you cannot simply double-click the file to run it on a standard computer. If you try to open it in a basic text editor, you will only see garbled, encoded characters. The Nintex license file is similarly restricted, utilizing hashed strings to prevent unauthorized tampering or copying. Users often struggle with these files because they are completely dependent on their parent hardware or software environments to function.

Because the Xerox version of the file uses standard compression, the best conversion target is ZIP. You can often rename the extension to ZIP to explore the internal folder structure, though the core Java classes will remain encrypted. For Nintex licenses, viewing the file as raw TXT or XML might reveal basic metadata, though the license key itself cannot be altered without breaking the signature.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is highly specialized and designed for machine consumption, not human reading. Emphasize that often only the original software or hardware interface can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as the standard ZIP container used by Xerox - viewing or extracting internal content may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NLF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AFW, RUI and SSU files.

The NLF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NLF converter.
