Convert a file to IMA
To convert other file formats to the "Medical Image or Disk Image" file type, you need software like ImageJ or a similar tool.
About IMA files
The .IMA file extension is primarily used for DICOM medical images (such as MRI, CT, or ultrasound scans) or as raw Floppy Disk Images for legacy hardware backups. Medical .IMA files are strictly formatted according to the DICOM Standard and are typically opened with clinical software like ImageJ. Conversely, disk image .IMA files are bit-for-bit sector copies of old floppy disks, commonly created and managed by WinImage.
These files present significant challenges for everyday users. Medical .IMA files are bulky, proprietary, and completely unsupported by native web browsers or default smartphone photo apps. Sharing a scan with family members or secondary doctors usually requires relying on a clunky CD-ROM viewer application. Meanwhile, floppy disk images are obsolete binary dumps that cannot be natively mounted by modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS, leaving the archived data trapped.
Conversion is the most practical workaround. For medical images, convert .IMA to JPG or PNG for instant web and mobile viewing, or to PDF for standard patient record archiving. Note that converting DICOM files to consumer image formats will strip embedded patient metadata and permanently compress the high dynamic range of the clinical scan. For disk archives, convert them to ISO for wider compatibility with modern virtual drives. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

The IMA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMA converter.
