About NDF files
The .ndf extension represents a split identity in the digital world, most critically serving as a Secondary Database File for Microsoft SQL Server. In this enterprise context, NDF files function as overflow storage for the primary Master Database File (MDF), allowing large datasets to span multiple disk drives for performance optimization. A major friction point for users is that an SQL .ndf file cannot be opened or viewed independently; it is inextricably linked to its parent MDF and log files (LDF), rendering it useless without the full database engine attached.
However, in consumer contexts, the .ndf extension is frequently encountered as a cached media file generated by NetEase applications (like Youdao Dictionary or Cloud Music). In these cases, the file is often just a disguised MP4 video or PNG image used to obscure content or manage bandwidth. Users often struggle to access this content outside the specific app. For SQL files, the goal is typically data extraction: converting table data to CSV, Excel, or SQL scripts for migration. For NetEase files, users need to convert the cached stream into playable MP4, MP3, or JPG formats. Less common variations include Nikon Dust Off reference photos and Ammonit wind measurement data, each requiring proprietary vendor software to interpret.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NDF file to MDF, DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD or FRM, you can use Microsoft SQL Server or similar software from the "SQL Server Secondary Database" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3, SQLITE or FRM files to NDF, try Microsoft SQL Server or another comparable tool in the "SQL Server Secondary Database" category.
The NDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NDF converter.
