About TRN files

The .TRN file extension is most critically associated with a SQL Server Transaction Log Backup, generated by Microsoft SQL Server. These files contain a record of all transactions performed against a database since the last log backup, serving as a crucial component for point-in-time disaster recovery. Unlike standard documents, SQL .TRN files are proprietary binary containers that generally cannot be opened in text editors or standard viewers.

A common issue with .TRN files is their dependency on the full backup chain; a .TRN file is often useless without the corresponding full database backup (.BAK) and any intervening differential backups. Users frequently need to "convert" these files to verify contents or audit data changes without restoring the entire database. For database auditing, specialized log readers can parse .TRN files and export data to CSV, SQL scripts, or HTML reports.

A secondary, distinct use of the extension is for Transcript files used by software like TranscriberAG or Stenograph Case CATalyst. These contain time-coded text for audio/video synchronization or court reporting. Users with these files often face compatibility issues when sharing transcripts with clients who lack the specific software. The best solution is converting these text-based .TRN files to universal formats like DOCX (Word), PDF, or plain TXT for easy distribution and printing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TRN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CRP, PDF, TXT, PRN, SAV, ZIP, TRC, RDL, LDF and VCD files.

The TRN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TRN converter.
