The .nbk file extension is primarily used for backup and application data files. These files are typically generated by digital note-taking applications like Noteful, MyScript Nebo, Notability, the discontinued Circus Ponies NoteBook, or open-source tools like Tomboy. They store handwritten notes, typed text, annotations, and entire notebook structures. Additionally, .nbk files act as system backups for Heidenhain CNC controllers and generic digital video recorders (DVRs).
The main disadvantage of .nbk files is their proprietary nature. Because multiple, completely unrelated software programs use the exact same .nbk extension, the internal structure varies wildly. For example, a Noteful backup uses standard ZIP compression, a Tomboy note uses XML, and a Nebo file relies on an SQL database structure. This fragmentation means a file exported from one app cannot be opened by another. Users are locked into the specific app that created the file, which becomes a major problem if the software is discontinued or requires a paid subscription to access legacy notes.
