About ACR files

The .ACR file extension represents a collision between modern creative workflows and legacy medical imaging. For most users today (approx. 70%), an .ACR file is a specialized Adobe Camera Raw sidecar file. These are automatically generated by Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom to store complex 'AI Mask' calculations (like 'Select Subject' or 'Select Sky') separately from standard XMP metadata.

Crucially, the Adobe .ACR file is NOT an image. It contains binary caching data to speed up editing. You cannot convert it to JPG or PNG because it lacks pixel data; the actual photo resides in your corresponding RAW, NEF, or CR2 file. These cache files can be safely deleted, though the software will be forced to re-calculate the masks next time you open the image.

However, in medical and archival contexts, .ACR refers to the ACR-NEMA format, the 1980s predecessor to the modern DICOM standard. These are raster images containing MRI, CT, or radiology scans. Because modern image viewers (like Windows Photos or Preview) cannot open legacy ACR-NEMA files, they must be converted.
