About NAM files

The .NAM extension represents a frustrating collision of two distinct technical worlds: network engineering and AI audio processing. Most commonly, these are Network Animator trace files generated by the ns-2 Network Simulator. These text-based logs record packet transmission events for visualization, but they are not video files. You cannot upload a .NAM file to YouTube or open it in VLC; it requires the archaic Network Animator (NAM) tool, often requiring a Linux environment or complex Tcl/Tk libraries to run. This proprietary lock-in makes sharing simulation results with non-technical stakeholders difficult. To present this data, users often need to convert the visualization to MP4 or GIF, or parse the underlying raw data into CSV for analysis in Excel.

Alternatively, in the modern audio production landscape, a .NAM file is a Neural Amp Model profile. These are JSON-structured or binary files used by the open-source Neural Amp Modeler plugin to replicate the sound of real guitar amplifiers using deep learning. These cannot be "played" like MP3 files; they must be loaded into a DAW (like Reaper or Logic Pro) via the specific plugin. Less frequently, this extension is found in scientific groundwater modeling (MODFLOW) or legacy hex-editing contexts like IDA Pro.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NAM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PRST, AM3DATA, ZIP, WAV, FLP, JPG, VRM, MMF, WDX and ANN files.

The NAM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NAM converter.
