Convert NAM to another file type
To convert NAM Model files to another format, you need Network Animator or other Data software.
Convert a file to NAM
To convert other file formats to the "Simulation Trace Log" file type, you need software like Network Animator or a similar tool.
About NAM files
.NAM files are primarily generated by the ns-2 Network Simulator. They contain trace data used by the Network Animator (NAM) to visually playback network simulation events, such as packet drops, link dynamics, and node states. A growing secondary use for the .NAM extension is in the audio engineering community, where it acts as a JSON-based neural network model for the open-source Neural Amp Modeler plugin, simulating guitar amplifiers and pedals. Minor uses include program location names in Hex-Rays IDA Pro and song metadata files for Yamaha Electone keyboards.
The main disadvantage of .NAM trace files is that they are highly specialized, unstructured plain-text logs that quickly exceed gigabytes in size during large network simulations. They require the outdated, UNIX-centric NAM interface to visualize, which is notoriously difficult to compile on modern operating systems. Similarly, Neural Amp Modeler .NAM files are strictly tied to specific VST3/AU plugin versions and are useless outside of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) environment.
To make sense of ns-2 trace data outside of the animator, convert .NAM to CSV or TXT for data parsing in Python, R, or MATLAB. If you are dealing with Neural Amp Modeler files, you cannot easily convert them to audio formats like WAV, but you can convert the underlying data structure to standard JSON or XML to audit the neural network weights.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NAM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NAM file to ANN, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use Network Animator or similar software from the "Network Simulation Trace Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to NAM, try Network Animator or another comparable tool in the "Network Simulation Trace Data" category.
The NAM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NAM converter.
