Convert a file to MXI
To convert other file formats to the "Inspection Routine" file type, you need software like MeasureX or a similar tool.
About MXI files
The .MXI file extension represents two distinct formats used in completely different industries.
1. MeasureX Inspection Routine (Primary): Most commonly, this file is a measurement routine used by MeasureX metrology software (developed by QVI and often associated with OGP or Micro-Vu style inspection workflows). These files contain automated instructions for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to inspect parts. The format is proprietary and strictly tied to the MeasureX environment. Users often need to "convert" these files when they want to share inspection data with clients who don't own the expensive metrology software. Since you cannot directly open a .mxi routine in Excel, the practical workaround is to use the MeasureX software to Export the results to CSV, PDF, or TXT.
2. Macromedia/Adobe Extension Information: Historically, .mxi files are XML-based manifest files used by the legacy Macromedia Extension Manager (later Adobe Extension Manager) to build extensions for tools like Dreamweaver and Flash. An .mxi file contains the metadata (name, version, author) required to package the extension into an MXP (Macromedia) or ZXP (Adobe) installer. Users often stumble upon these files in old project archives. Because modern Adobe CC tools do not natively recognize raw .mxi files, users must often convert them by compiling them into a ZXP package or simply viewing the XML content in a text editor like Notepad++.
3. Maxwell Image (Rare): A small percentage of files are high-dynamic-range images generated by Maxwell Render. These contain lighting calculations and can be converted to standard JPG or EXR for use in Photoshop.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MXI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MXI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MXI converter.
