Convert MU to another file type
To convert MU meshes to another format, you need Kerbal Space Program or other 3D software.
Convert a file to MU
To convert other file formats to the "Game Asset Mesh" file type, you need software like Kerbal Space Program or a similar tool.
About MU files
A .MU file is predominantly a proprietary 3D model asset used by the space flight simulation game Kerbal Space Program (KSP), developed by Squad. These files contain compiled 3D mesh data, animations, and material references for spacecraft parts and celestial bodies. Secondary uses include encrypted wallet recovery kits for the Muun Bitcoin Wallet and JSON-based aircraft design models for MachUp aerodynamics software. Users typically encounter .MU files when modding KSP or extracting game assets for 3D printing and animation. The primary disadvantage of the .MU format is that it is a compiled, highly proprietary binary format. It cannot be opened directly by standard 3D modeling tools like Blender, Autodesk Maya, or web browsers. You cannot preview these files natively on Windows or macOS. To edit or repurpose a KSP .MU file, you need to convert it to standard 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or DAE (Collada). Converting to these formats makes the geometry accessible, though proprietary KSP shaders and custom animation rigging are often lost during the export process. Because the .MU format is closed and lacks official documentation, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original game engine or specific community-developed import scripts can properly read the geometry. Our tool will inspect the file structure, detecting if it is a binary KSP mesh, an encrypted Muun recovery file, or a readable MachUp JSON model. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MU file to MW, MG, HA, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB or C4D, you can use Kerbal Space Program or similar software from the "Game 3D Model Asset" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MU, try Kerbal Space Program or another comparable tool in the "Game 3D Model Asset" category.
The MU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MU converter.
