About MU files
A .MU file is a proprietary compiled 3D model format used primarily by the space flight simulation game Kerbal Space Program (KSP) to store vehicle parts and environmental assets.
These files are the lifeblood of KSP modding but present a significant hurdle: they are proprietary binary containers. Unlike standard open formats like OBJ or STL, you cannot simply open a .MU file in Adobe Substance 3D or AutoCAD. They package geometry (meshes), texture references, collider data, and node hierarchies specifically for KSP's Unity-based engine. This "locked" nature makes them inaccessible for 3D printing or external rendering without conversion.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Modding & Editing: Convert to BLEND using Blender. This is the only reliable workflow, requiring the specific "KSP .mu import/export" plugin to interpret the binary data correctly.
- For 3D Printing: Once in Blender, the model can be exported to STL for slicing software.
- For Other Game Engines: Convert to FBX or OBJ to migrate assets to engines like Unreal Engine or standard Unity projects.
*Note: A small minority of .MU files may be associated with MachUp aerodynamics software (JSON-based) or legacy backups. Always verify the file source.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your MU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted OBJ, MP3, MSH, MESH, OGF, MW, MG and HA files.
The MU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MU converter.
