The .MTR file extension is notoriously fragmented, utilized by dozens of completely unrelated enterprise and industrial applications. Most commonly, it acts as a UFT Test Resource file used by Micro Focus UFT (Unified Functional Testing) to store automated test scripts, object repositories, and execution logs using a proprietary Microsoft Compound structure. Alternatively, it serves as a qualitative analysis code system file for MAXQDA (structured via SQL), a servo motor configuration file for Teknic ClearPath, an XML medical device test record for Fluke Ansur, or even a compressed CNC woodworking machine data archive for Masterwood Masterwork.
Because the .MTR format lacks a standardized internal architecture, users constantly struggle to open these files. The primary disadvantage is that the extension gives absolutely no clue about the underlying data structure. Some .MTR files are standard XML documents or ZIP archives, while others are locked inside proprietary binary formats or JetDB databases. Opening the wrong .MTR file in the wrong software usually results in immediate crashes or unreadable hexadecimal gibberish. Furthermore, accessing the data typically requires an expensive, specialized software license.
For conversion, target formats depend entirely on the file's origin. If the file contains text-based code or XML records, extracting the data to TXT, XML, or CSV is optimal. For database variants (like CCH Master Tax Reporter), exporting to MDB, SQL, or XLSX is required. Converting specialized 3D models from Moldex3D or game replays (like Tetr.io) to generic formats usually results in complete data loss.
