About MSL files

The .MSL file extension is utilized by several completely distinct software applications, making it notoriously difficult to handle without the original software. Most commonly, an .MSL file is a Function Block Diagram program created with Segnetics SMLogix. It can also act as an XML-based Slideshow Project File for CyberLink PowerCinema or MAGIX media software, or an ECU engine data log file generated by the MegaSquirt Engine Management System. Less commonly, it functions as a Mass Spectral Library file in NIST AMDIS, or a script file for ImageMagick.

The primary disadvantage of an .MSL file is its proprietary nature. Whether it contains logic diagrams, slideshow timelines, or raw engine telemetry, the file itself is generally useless without the specific program that created it. For example, a CyberLink slideshow file does not contain actual video or images; it only contains XML references to the media files located on your local hard drive. Sharing an .MSL file directly with colleagues or friends usually results in an 'unsupported format' error or missing media warnings.

To make the data usable, users must convert .MSL files to universal formats. MegaSquirt logs should be exported to CSV or XLSX for external data analysis. Slideshow projects must be rendered into standard video formats like MP4 or AVI directly within the original CyberLink or MAGIX software. SMLogix diagram programs are best exported to PDF or PNG for printing and peer review.

Because these are highly fragmented, closed formats, direct online conversion is often impossible without the native software. Standard online converters fail to process .MSL files because they lack the specific rendering engines required to interpret the proprietary XML nodes, binary blocks, or local media paths. However, you can use convert.guru. Just drag and drop your file to identify the exact format, view its internal text or XML structure, and convert it when possible. If our system detects an underlying standard format like plain-text telemetry, you can safely extract the data.

The MSL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSL converter.
