About MLS files
The .MLS extension represents a diverse set of data formats, most commonly serving as a Multi-Language Support file generated by Teknum Systems. These files store translated string tables used to localize software interfaces, allowing applications to switch between languages dynamically. While essential for global deployment, .MLS files are often binary-encoded or strictly formatted, meaning you cannot simply open them in a standard text editor like Notepad++ to modify translations. Users frequently encounter these files when attempting to customize legacy software or extract language data for translation memory tools.
A significant secondary use of the format is within the gaming industry, specifically for Rockstar Games titles like Manhunt and Max Payne 2. In this context, the file functions as a compiled level script containing logic for game events. Modders often struggle with these files because they are compiled bytecode, rendering them unreadable without specific decompilation tools. Other niche uses include survey data from Modalisa and audio measurements from Audiomatica Clio.
Because of this fragmentation, the best approach is to convert the file to a human-readable standard. For localization and scripting, converting to TXT, XML, or CSV allows for editing and archiving. For survey and audio data, converting to XLSX or PDF ensures the information is accessible without requiring the original proprietary software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MLS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MLG, MSL, EML, R, ALN, XVG and MG files.
The MLS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MLS converter.
