About MPK files

The .mpk file extension is mostly used as an ArcGIS Map Package. Developed by Esri, these files contain a map document along with its referenced spatial data, layouts, and properties into a single portable file. Another frequent use for .mpk files is as a Visual Novel Game Archive for games built on the KiriKiri or KAG engines, functioning as a container for game assets like sprites, scripts, and audio. Additionally, .mpk acts as a Mendix Module Package file for the Mendix low-code platform. The primary disadvantage of an .mpk file is its proprietary application lock-in. For GIS users, you cannot simply open an .mpk on a system without an active, expensive ArcGIS license. Furthermore, these files easily exceed hundreds of megabytes, making them difficult to share or upload over standard web limits. KiriKiri game archives are entirely closed containers designed specifically to prevent asset extraction, which stops players from modding or translating games. For ArcGIS packages, the most practical conversion targets are standard archive formats like 7Z or ZIP, which allow you to extract the underlying shapefiles (SHP), geodatabases, and XML metadata. Alternatively, users often want to convert the map layouts to PDF or PNG for broad distribution. Game archives usually need extraction to JPG, PNG, or OGG to access media. Standard online converters fail to process .mpk files because the format is highly specialized and relies on proprietary rendering engines. Most converters cannot interpret the internal GIS links or bypass the specific asset encryption of visual novel engines. Only the original software can properly render the map or run the game data. Because many .mpk files (like ArcGIS and Mendix files) use underlying 7z or ZIP compression, our analysis tools can often inspect the file, reveal the internal folder structure, and extract the embedded data for you without requiring the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MPKX, MPKINFO, MXD, MMPK, MKV, CPG, ZIP, N64, KMZ, 7Z, MP4, SHX and SBV files.

The MPK Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPK converter.
