Convert MPK to another file type
To convert your MPK file to another format, you need ArcGIS Pro or other GIS software.
Convert a file to MPK
To convert other file formats to the "Geospatial Data Container" file type, you need software like ArcGIS Pro or a similar tool.
About MPK files
The .MPK extension primarily identifies an ArcGIS Map Package, a compressed container format developed by Esri to simplify the sharing of complete map projects. Unlike standard map documents (Project Files), an MPK file bundles the map definition (MXD) along with all referenced spatial data, layers, and symbology into a single archive. While this ensures data integrity during transfer, it is often a source of frustration for users without access to the paid ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap software suite, effectively locking the content away behind a proprietary wall.
Beyond geospatial data, .MPK is also a common extension for gaming and development. It is used by Project64 as a Nintendo 64 Controller Pak image (storing game saves), by the KiriKiri engine for visual novel assets, and by Mendix for application modules. This overlap causes frequent confusion, as opening a game save in GIS software (or vice versa) will result in errors.
For ArcGIS users needing to share maps with clients who lack GIS software, the best workflow is converting the rendered map to PDF or JPG for universal viewing. To access the raw data inside an MPK without Esri software, users can often treat the file as a ZIP archive to extract the underlying SHP (Shapefiles) or GDB (File Geodatabases). For Project64 users, conversion usually involves managing save states or exporting to raw binary formats for cross-emulator compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MPK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MPK file to MP4, SHP, MPM, KML, MOV, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF or ECW, you can use ArcGIS Pro or similar software from the "ArcGIS Map Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to MPK, try ArcGIS Pro or another comparable tool in the "ArcGIS Map Package" category.
The MPK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPK converter.
