About WLMP files

The .WLMP file is a project file created by Windows Live Movie Maker, a discontinued video editing software included in the Windows Essentials suite. Unlike standard video files, a .WLMP does not contain actual video or audio stream data. Instead, it is an XML-based text file that saves the state of your project - storing file paths to your source photos, video clips, and audio tracks, along with instructions for transitions, effects, and timeline edits.

Because the file only contains references rather than media, .WLMP files cannot be played in media players like VLC, uploaded to YouTube, or viewed on mobile devices. A common frustration arises when users transfer a .WLMP file to another computer or USB drive only to find it "broken" because the software can no longer locate the source assets at their original paths (e.g., C:\Users\Photos\Image.jpg). Additionally, since Microsoft discontinued support in 2017, opening these files has become increasingly difficult on modern systems like Windows 10 and 11.

To make the content usable, the project must be "rendered" or converted into a standalone container. The ideal target for modern compatibility is MP4 (H.264), which ensures playback on all devices and web platforms. For legacy Windows systems, converting to WMV remains a viable option.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WLMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WMV, MP4, FILMF, MMP, MLW, WMP, PDF, PNG, HEIC, AVI, ZIP, CDA and WEBP files.

The WLMP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WLMP converter.
