About WLMP files
A .WLMP file is a video project file created by Windows Live Movie Maker, a legacy video editing application developed by Microsoft. It stores a timeline of edits, transition effects, audio levels, and file paths. The biggest disadvantage of a .WLMP file is that it is not a real video. It is an XML text document that merely points to the photos, audio, and video clips stored on your local hard drive. Because it contains no actual media data and relies on absolute local file paths, standard online video converters always fail to process it. Furthermore, the parent software was discontinued in 2017, making it difficult to open on modern systems. The ultimate goal for most users is to export the project to MP4 or WMV. To do this properly, you must open the project in the original software and select 'Save movie'. This file format is notoriously frustrating to open or convert without the original environment. This allows you to read the text and see the exact file paths of the missing media you need to reconstruct your video.
