About MLC files

The .MLC file extension is most frequently associated with the Microsoft Language Component, a legacy container format used to deliver Language Interface Packs (LIPs) for older versions of Microsoft Windows. These files function as localized overlays, allowing the operating system to switch user interface text - menus, dialog boxes, and help topics - into a different language without reinstalling the entire OS.

The catch for users encountering .MLC files is their opacity. They are proprietary system containers, not documents intended for human consumption. You cannot simply double-click an .MLC file to read the language data inside, nor can you import it into standard text editors like Notepad++ or word processors like Microsoft Word. They are strictly designed for the Windows Installer service. Users often find these files as leftover artifacts in temporary directories or installation folders (e.g., C:\ProgramData), taking up space with no clear utility once the language pack is installed.

For practical purposes, "converting" an .MLC file usually implies extracting its contents or identifying the specific resources within. Since many .MLC files utilize internal compression similar to CAB (Cabinet) or ZIP archives, changing the extension to ZIP and attempting to extract it is a common troubleshooting step for advanced users wanting to inspect the manifest files (often XML) or binary resources.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MLC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted USP, VXD, EX, BAR and PSI files.

The MLC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MLC converter.
