About VXD files
A .VXD file is a legacy Virtual Device Driver used exclusively by Windows 95, 98, and Me. These executable binary files operated at the kernel level to manage hardware resources (like video cards, mice, or network adapters) for the operating system.
The Problem: Because .VXD files are compiled 32-bit code specific to the outdated VxD driver model, they are incompatible with modern operating systems like Windows 10 or 11 (which use SYS files and the WDM model). You cannot "open" them to view content like a document, nor can you convert them to standard image or video formats.
The Solution: 1. Check for Typos (Most Likely): If you are trying to open a diagram or a virtual disk, you likely have a typo. Users often confuse .VXD with VSDX (Microsoft Visio drawings) or VHDX (Hyper-V Virtual Disks). Check your file source. 2. For Analysis: If you genuinely need to inspect a legacy driver, do not attempt to convert it. Instead, open it with a Hex Editor like HxD to view the raw binary data, or use a text editor like Notepad++ to search for readable version strings inside the code.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VSD, PDF, EX, X16 and IDENTIFIER files.

The VXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VXD converter.
