Convert a file to VXD
To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Device Driver" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.
About VXD files
A .vxd file is a Virtual Device Driver used primarily in legacy Microsoft Windows 9x operating systems (such as Windows 95, 98, and ME) to allow software to communicate directly with hardware. These files execute at the highest privilege level (Ring 0) in the Windows kernel. You can read more about them on their Wikipedia page.
Users typically encounter .vxd files when extracting old software archives or attempting to run retro games. The main disadvantage of the .vxd format is that it is completely obsolete. Modern Windows operating systems use entirely different driver architectures (like .SYS files using WDM or WDF) and cannot natively load .vxd files. Furthermore, because these are executable binary files, they pose security risks and cannot be "converted" into standard documents or images.
Standard online converters fail to process .vxd files because they are compiled, proprietary system files rather than standard media or text. However, reverse engineers and developers often need to convert or extract the underlying assembly code using disassemblers like IDA Pro or Ghidra. Our platform can inspect the internal Linear Executable (LE) or EXE headers, extract plain text strings, and reveal embedded resources safely without risking a system crash.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VSD, PDF, EX, X16 and IDENTIFIER files.
FAQ

To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to VXD, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Legacy System Hardware Driver" category.
The VXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VXD converter.
