About MJPEG files

A .MJPEG (Motion JPEG) file is a video sequence where every single frame is compressed separately as a JPEG image. Unlike modern formats that save space by only storing the changes between frames (inter-frame compression), .MJPEG treats video as a rapid slideshow of full-resolution photos. This makes the format extremely popular for IP cameras, CCTV systems, and medical imaging because it requires very little processing power to encode and allows for easy extraction of high-quality still images from any point in the timeline.

However, users often face significant friction with raw .MJPEG files. The lack of temporal compression results in massive file sizes - often 10x larger than a comparable MP4 file - which eats up storage and bandwidth. Furthermore, raw .MJPEG streams often lack a standard container header, meaning default system players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime may fail to recognize or play them without installing specific codec packs. To fix playback issues and drastically reduce file size for sharing, the best practice is to convert these files to MP4 (using the H.264 or H.265 codec). If you need to edit the footage without losing quality, wrapping the stream into a MOV or AVI container is ideal. For extracting evidence or snapshots, converting the file to a sequence of JPG images is the most direct workflow.
