About MJPG files
The .MJPG file format is a continuous stream or recording of Motion JPEG video. It is primarily generated by IP security cameras (such as those from Axis Communications), digital video recorders (DVRs), network video recorders (NVRs), and 3D printers (like Raise3D) to capture continuous streams or timelapses. Instead of using complex temporal video compression, it sequentially links a series of standard JPG images together.
You can typically view raw .mjpg streams in web browsers or open the saved files using robust media software like VLC media player. However, keeping video in this raw format is rarely practical. .MJPG files have significant disadvantages: they produce massive file sizes because they lack inter-frame compression (unlike modern H.264 or HEVC codecs). Furthermore, raw MJPEG streams often lack native audio synchronization and fail to play on mobile devices or social media platforms unless multiplexed into an AVI or MP4 container.
Converting your .MJPG files is highly recommended to save storage space and ensure playback compatibility. For web use, archiving, and general playback on smartphones, convert to MP4. If the video is a short, silent security clip or 3D print timelapse, convert to GIF or animated WEBP for easy sharing online. The MJPG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MJPG converter.
