A .mjpg file is a Motion JPEG video stream, a rudimentary video format where every single frame is stored as a separate, distinct JPG image. Unlike modern video formats (like MP4 or HEVC) that save space by only recording the changes between frames, .mjpg files save a complete high-quality photograph for every fraction of a second. This makes them exceptionally easy for low-power hardware to record but results in massive file sizes and poor playback compatibility.
Users typically encounter this format in two specific scenarios: retrieving raw timelapse footage from the SD cards of Raise3D printers (which save timelapses as raw MJPEG streams) or extracting video streams from Axis network security cameras. Because the file is essentially a "digital flipbook" of JPEGs rather than a contained video, standard players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime often fail to open it, and web browsers cannot play it directly as a video file.
